The Influential Series: Part II

With music reaching out to millions of people across the globe, they become aware of the current music trends and what it has to offer.

There is a huge variety of genres ranging from pop, hip-hop, R’n’B and rock. I can go on with a list of my own preferences and current favourites, but to be honest it would be endless because there are so many great artists out there at the moment and who have of course gained credibility.

Two Filipinos who have given us that credibility and have become a global phenomenon in the music scene are Nicole Scherzinger from The Pussycat Dolls and Apl.de.ap from the Black Eyed Peas. These two artists have created their own global success and have given the Filipinos added recognition in the entertainment industry. This gives people outside of our culture an insight into the Philippines and its people.

Nicole joined the Pussycat Dolls burlesque troupe in 2003, and then worldwide domination arrived with the success of hits such as “Don’t Cha” and “Stickwithu”. Outside of the group she has solo projects of her own and has worked with Avant, P Diddy, T.I, will.i.am, NKOTB and Timbaland. She is the first female Filipino artist to have worked with these world-renowned names.

Apl.de.ap from the Black Eyed Peas is another Filipino artist who has also achieved success in the American hip-hop scene.

Apl honoured his origin and made people out there know about Filipino’s by illustrating this into his songs such as ‘The Apl song’ and ‘Bebot’. The group have achieved winning three Grammy awards and have continuously been nominated year after year.

Apl is also currently collaborating with other successful Filipinos such as Chad of The Neptunes

Nicole and Apl are an example of how proud we are to be Filipino; and more and more Filipino artists like them, are rising up the music scene ladder of international success.
