The Barrio Fiesta season is nearly upon us. I can recall my very first experience of the Barrio Fiesta. It was at Holland Park in the 80s and was pretty empty compared to the ones we have now, but it was a place where people could meet and unite to celebrate their culture and heritage. As the Filipino population in the London area grew, committees were set up and bigger fiestas were held, in particular Morden and Hounslow.
Morden Park will host a weekend of Philippine Independence Day celebrations on the 6th & 7th June 2009; with Hounslow hosting their own Independence Day celebrations on the 14th of June 2009 at Lampton Park. Despite last year’s last minute cancellation and change of date, the Philippine Centre is back to host the longest running annual Barrio Fiesta sa London event at Lampton Park on the weekend of the 18th and 19th of July 2009. More details to follow.
The Barrio Fiesta Season for 2009, will look to succeed previous years with the backing of sponsors and a highly anticipated roster of Filipino artists. LDNmeetsMNL will be there cover the fiestas, in particular the London area.
Whether it rains or shines? The food that you can make at home for half the price? The entertainment? The large social meeting of family and friends in an open venue? Or simply the tradition of ‘back home’? Whatever it is, thousands of Filipinos can’t be wrong as they still continue to visit and uphold this annual tradition.

[...] Barrio Fiesta Season is now officially over. After Morden, Yorkshire, Bradford, Milton Keynes, Blackpool, and of course London, it’s time to pack up the stalls for another year. Where once Barrio Fiesta – whichever one you chose to go to, was the must-go event of the summer this year I struggled to find anyone who attended one Barrio Fiesta, let alone all of them. [...]
