President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo declared back in August 2003, that the month of May would be represented as the Philippines’ National Heritage Month.
The purpose of this declaration is to raise Filipinos’ national perception regarding their heritage and culture, but to also reignite their interest, love and respect for the country’s cultural history. It was also designated to create awareness and interest about the Philippines to others.
For this month of May, the theme will be “Awit at Sayaw” (Singing and Dancing), exploring the Philippines’ interpretations of Filipino music through the years. Even though there is a theme, the exploration of the Filipino culture is not restricted. Whether it be through attending Filipino events during May, encouraging the participation of preserving cultural heritage sites, to visiting art exhibits, to sharing knowledge of your own experiences and photos of past trips, to even cooking Filipino cuisine for friends and colleagues; these are all great ways to celebrate and promote your Filipino heritage.
